Taman Negara Pulau Pinang

In the northwest corner of Penang Island lies Taman Negara Pulau Pinang. This discreet nature reserve straddles 1,266 hectares of coastal hill dipterocarps, mangroves, beaches, and rocky shores. In Peninsular Malaysia, it ranks second in size to Taman Negara. Although some parts were logged until the early 1970's, the forest remains largely intact.
As a metropolitan national park, it has potential for world heritage listing. Many species of flora and fauna - including rare and endangered ones - thrive here, barely 45 minutes from the city centre.

Satellite Tracking of Hawksbill Turtles

18 Aug 2008, Three more turtles deployed with satellite transmitters WWF-Malaysia, in partnership with the Department of Fisheries Melaka and Kem Terendak military base camp, has successfully deployed a satellite transmitter on a female hawksbill turtle in the wee hours of 13 August 2008 after she successfully nested. Lack of data hampers conservation effortsFor decades, efforts to save the hawksbills have focused primarily on safeguarding the eggs and ensuring that hatchlings survive and grow to eventually form a viable population. No one knows where these ancient mariners go after the nesting season, or where they forage as juveniles and adults.

Research elsewhere have shown that whilst some populations of hawksbills nest on nearby beaches fringing coral reefs, others migrate hundreds to thousands of kilometres in search of sponges at distant foraging grounds. Where do hawksbills that nest on Melaka’s shores swim off to after nesting? Where do they feed? Do they forage in Malaysian waters or migrate to distant coral reefs in neighbouring waters to live?This lack of information hampers efforts to plan for turtle conservation.

Satellite tracking of Melaka’s hawksbills using transmitters is one of the ways that will enable us to find out more about these gentle and beautiful mariners to effectively conserve them for our future generations.

Tracking Hawksbills by satelliteWWF-Malaysia is using satellite telemetry to track hawksbills on the journey back to their feeding grounds. Marine turtles are only dependent on the beach for egg incubation and spend most of their lifetime in coastal waters, feeding in coral reefs. Results from this research are crucial for a better understanding of their post-nesting movement and habitat use.

The project is tracking hawksbills to:
establish the migration route and feeding ground of the hawksbills to facilitate the protection of their habitat; communicate migration routes and distant foraging grounds of hawksbills to relevant regional Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and Agreements so as to enhance regional marine turtle conservation strategies and partnerships (e.g. Indian Ocean-Southeast Asia Marine Turtle MoU and MoU on ASEAN Sea Turtle Conservation and Protection); and
educate and create awareness among local schoolchildren in the coastal areas, based on satellite telemetry of turtles.

Volunteering

Share your time and resources while learning more about the exciting world of environmental conservation by volunteering in one of our projects. You never know where it might lead. Our former Executive Director (ED), Dato’ Mike Kavanagh, joined as a volunteer in 1991 and this led to him heading the organisation for 15 years. Volunteering has also reaped rewards for Brian Lee. Although he came in as an intern in 1996, he also volunteered for quite a while.

He has this to say to aspiring greenies, "Have you ever thought about how things can be much better than it is? Cleaner water, greener cities, happier communities. Imagine how you will feel when you’re able to contribute to this. Day after day, month after month. It’s a good feeling. Like being part of a large global family. Humans, tigers, orang-utans, trees, rivers and so much more. Come and join us." From time to time, WWF-Malaysia do take in volunteers as and when there is a request from the projects. Earth Hour

YOUR LIGHT SWITCH IS YOUR VOTE

This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming.

For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.

This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from.

VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.We all have a vote, and every single vote counts. Volunteering @ The Animal Shelter

There are many volunteer duties at the animal shelter

These include the morning sessions of kennel cleaning, helping to prepare and serve meals to the animals, kennel guides (assisting the public when choosing an animal), socializing the animals, and general housekeeping duties. Experienced dog handlers may also assist with walking the dogs, bathing and grooming them.

Volunteer work starts at 9am everyday, up to 4pm. Individuals and smaller groups of up to 5 people can drop by for volunteer work anytime, however we require bigger groups to inform us of their intended visit beforehand (for easier coordination, maximum group size is 15 pax). Age Restrictions
Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent, teacher or guardian above 18 years of age.Dress Code & Precious BelongingsAll volunteers are urged to dress appropriately, and bring a spare change of clothes as there is a high chance of getting your clothes wet or soiled while at the shelter! Cotton t-shirts with shorts/ long pants are recommended, as well as covered rubber shoes. SPCA will provide a room or locker for volunteers to store their belongings temporarily, but please keep your valuables e.g. wallets, cameras, handphones on you at all times. A waistpouch is convenient for this purpose!

Health & SafetyPlease

bring your own gloves, face masks or aprons. We also advice you to practice extreme caution when handling the shelter animals, as some of them may be unsocialized or ill. If at any point you are unsure of an animal, please approach one of the kennel staff for assistance.Please also wash your hands between handling animals, to prevent the spread of contagious diseases. It is strongly advisable to also disinfect yourself and change your clothes before handling your own pets at home, after a visit to the shelter.
